About the Temple

The Arasavalli Sun God Temple (Sri Surya Narayana Swamy Devalayam) is one of the oldest and most revered sun temples in India. Located in the town of Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh, it is dedicated to Lord Surya (the Sun God). Key Highlights & ArchitectureThe Deity: The main idol is a magnificent 5-foot-tall sculpture carved out of a single block of black granite. Lord Surya is depicted standing on a chariot driven by seven horses, guided by his charioteer Aruna, and flanked by his consorts Usha, Chhaya, and Padmini. Architectural Marvel: The temple is ingeniously designed according to Kalinga architecture. Twice a year—specifically on March 9–11 and October 1–3—the early morning natural sun rays pass directly through the entrance gates and fall straight onto the feet of the presiding deity. Indra Pushkarini: The temple features a sacred tank (pond) on its grounds, which legend says was dug by Lord Indra using his weapon, the Vajrayudha. Mythology and HistoryOrigin Name: The original name of the area was Harshavalli, which translates to "Abode of Joy," eventually evolving into Arasavalli. The Legend (Sthalapuranam): According to local lore, Lord Indra once tried to force entry into the nearby temple of Lord Shiva (Uma Rudra Koteswara Swamy) at an inappropriate hour. Nandi (the divine gatekeeper) kicked and injured Indra. While unconscious, Indra dreamed that he would be healed of his chest injury if he built a temple for the Sun God. Upon waking, he unearthed the image of Lord Surya and consecrated it. Historical Roots: Archaeological records and stone inscriptions suggest that the original temple was built around the 7th century CE by King Devendra Varma, a ruler of the Kalinga dynasty. Significance & FestivalsHealth and Healing: Devotees strongly believe that praying to Lord Surya at Arasavalli can cure chronic ailments, particularly skin diseases, eye problems, and physical disabilities. Major Festivals: Ratha Saptami is celebrated here with grand devotion and massive gatherings, drawing tens of thousands of pilgrims from across Andhra Pradesh and neighboring states.
